Our Mission

Sharing stories to tackle Bay Area’s Homeless Problem

About Us

Homeless Horizons aims to raise awareness on the ongoing state of homeless in the Bay Area through interviews with policymakers, community leaders, and homeless individuals. Through our awareness videos, we hope to catalyze actionable solutions to improve outcomes for San Francisco’s homeless population.

Our Founder

Hi! My name is Alex, and I am the Founder and President of Homeless Horizons. Here is a bit about me and why I care about helping Bay Area’s homeless issue.

Growing up in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, I’ve witnessed homelessness up front.

As a child, I remember passing a homeless man outside my building in New York City. He would always say “stay in school kid.” Although my younger self did not understand why he always told me this, I built a close connection to him. A few years ago, when I moved to the Bay Area and witnessed its homeless crisis, I looked back to the homeless individual outside my building and wondered: what was his life’s story? I wanted to know why he always told me to stay in school. I realized this small interaction sensitized me to the incredible challenges the homeless face. Wanting to learn more, I made a documentary film during last summer to explore homelessness in San Francisco and ways to eradicate it. What could we do to help? Why was homelessness still happening? My film was recognized by my school, and this motivated me to keep working on combating the issue.

Now, I am leading Homeless Horizons, which aims to bring voices to unhoused individuals. I believe that if community members can empathize and relate to homeless stories, communities will implement actionable solutions with greater effectiveness and efficiency.

I am deeply passionate about this project and hope others will help join the cause.

Our President

Hi! My name is Oliver, and I’m the president primary researcher for Homeless Horizons.

Like my brother Alex, I grew up in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, surrounded by the homelessness crisis impacting thousands. Every time I walked by, the same question probed in my mind: Why did the issue become so out of hand? With my brother creating Homeless Horizons, I had the perfect opportunity to answer such an inquiry. Now, I do much of the research for the organization, including for the website, interviews, and our 40-minute-long documentary.

Hopefully, with our work, we can address the issue and tackle the problem!

Why Stories?

Why does Homeless Horizons share stories, and how will these stories help Bay Area’s Homeless issue?

We believe that there is misinformation spread about the homeless population in the Bay Area. In particular, people often blame homelessness on the individual experiencing it rather than ineffective policies and perverse incentives within our local and federal governments. Lack of mental health programs, affordable housing, and stable employment are some of the most prominent contributors to the Bay Area’s homeless crisis. Unfortunately, Bay Area citizens have very little control over these root causes.

Through storytelling, we hope that community members can foster an authentic understanding of Bay Area’s homeless situation. Then, we can unite to fight homelessness by donating, volunteering, and advocating for policy changes.

Above all, we hope that people change their perspective on the homeless issue by viewing the homeless population in a more positive light.
